'Turn it Square' hands on class with Steve McLoon. Beginner to advanced turner. Beginners should have turned a normal bowl before this class & or taken a basic bowl class.

I will teach a class on turning square bowls this Saturday morning. We will be at the usual MWA site (12811 16th Ave. N, Plymouth). Participants should arrive by 9:00am (or earlier to help set up).

The main tool you will need is a bowl gouge. Any size will work. Also, bring a bedan, a parting tool (as wide as you have), a small square scraper or a skew if you can. This will be used for making a recessed tenon with a nice square wall. A small ruler and/or depth gauge would be helpful. (I will have some to share.) You might want to bring some sandpaper, but since we will not have dust collection, we might not want to sand there.

If possible, bring wood to turn. The top and bottom should be square. If you can, sand all surfaces. I will have a sander along if you need to do it there. Almost any size wood will work. A block with 4-6” square top and bottom surfaces and a height about 2/3 of the top width makes a great looking bowl, and is fast to turn. Alternatively, a fun project in this genre is to make a ulu cutting board. These usually have a 6-8” top/bottom surface, and are 1½-2” high. (Woodcraft sells ulu knife kits, or you can buy finished knives online.) If I can get over to my shop this week, I will prep some small squares of walnut in case you do not have wood.

You should be able to finish one bowl in a couple of hours. In case anyone is ambitious, I can stay around until 3:00. If you think you will stay late, you might want to bringing lunch. (There are some fast food places nearby.)

Email me if you have questions. I hope to see you Saturday.
