Subject: Turn it Square, by Steve McLoon

Just because you turn something on the lathe does not mean that it has to be completely round. You can turn squares, rectangles or many shapes between square and round. The trick is to start with a piece of wood partially in the shape you want, and then do not completely turn the exterior. You may remember my 2015 demonstration and classes on turning sushi trays. That was an advanced project. There are many easier ways to use the same approach. We will explore the possibilities during this demonstration. I plan to turn one 'square bowl' during the demo.
I recently used this approach to turn bowls from beams from a 100 year old barn for clients who wanted something to commemorate the original barn on their family's farm, which had to be torn down.
